OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS

Dr. Roswell N. Beck, Sr. Post Office Dedication Today in Florence

(Florence, SC) – Sixth District Congressman James E. Clyburn will join officials from the U.S. Postal Service and the Beck family today to dedicate the Dr. Roswell N. Beck, Sr. Post Office at 1901 W. Evans Street in Florence at 2:30 p.m.

Congressman Clyburn introduced House Resolution 1055 to name the W. Evans Street Post Office in honor of Dr. Beck for his significant contributions to the state and the Florence community.  It was signed into law last year.

Dr. Beck, a South Carolina native, was a veteran of the Korean War, in which he was awarded a bronze star.  After the service, he returned to Florence to open a medical practice that provided quality health care to underserved communities in the Pee Dee.  In addition, he found time to organize the Florence Committee for Community Affairs, was instrumental in bringing the first Headstart program to Florence County, and served as the chairman of the Voter Education Project (VEP) for the Sixth Congressional District.  His community service extended to appointments on the S.C. Commission on Human Relations and the S.C. Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse.  He was a former Trustee of the Medical University of South Carolina and served on the Centennial Commission for Florence County.  Governor Dick Riley honored Dr. Beck for his extraordinary service with the Order of the Palmetto.  He passed away in January 2003.

Dr. Beck is survived by his wife, the former Barbara Brice, and his children, Janice C. Beck, Celeste B. Abdallah, and Dr. Roswell N. Beck, Jr.
