COLUMBIA, SC – Congressman James E. Clyburn issued the following statement today after the Senate passed legislation he authored to designate the U.S. Post Office located at 1550 Middleton Street in Orangeburg, South Carolina as the “J.I. Washington Post Office”:
“I am pleased President Biden will soon sign legislation renaming the post office at 1550 Middleton Street in Orangeburg, South Carolina the 'J.I. Washington Post Office.' J.I., as he was known throughout the community, was a pillar in Orangeburg and highly influential throughout South Carolina. J.I. kept a low profile and saw his role working behind the scenes, as his calling. But he was the go-to guy when you wanted to get something done.
“His name on this post office will be a constant reminder that everyone has a role to play to make their community a better place. Despite having never stood for elective office, he accomplished more than many elected officials and had a significant impact on the community and the state. I look forward to the dedication of the post office in his honor.”
