SANTEE, SC — Today, Congressman James E. Clyburn released the following statement on the passing of the 39th President of the United States, James Earl Carter, Jr.:
“President Jimmy Carter lived a life devoted to public service, compassion, perseverance, human rights, and serving our great country.
“President Carter leaves an enduring legacy of international peace and diplomacy. On his second day of office, Carter pardoned all Vietnam War draft evaders. He brokered historic peace agreements between Egypt and Israel, created the Departments of Energy and Education, led efforts to negotiate a hostage crisis in Iran, signed the Panama Canal Treaty, created the Carter Center, and so much more.
“He was ardently committed to preventing and resolving state conflict, promoting freedom and democracy, and fostering the health of millions of people around the world.
“He was a man of faith, a proud son of Georgia, and a patriotic American who loved his country. He believed in better days ahead, togetherness, and the promise of America.
“President Carter once said, ‘Let us learn together and laugh together and work together and pray together, confident that in the end, we will triumph together in the right.’ Each day, let us live by these principles in our pursuit of a more just, equitable, and accessible country for all.
“It is with great sadness the nation mourns his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
