Congressman Clyburn Announces Britton’s Neck/Gresham Department to Receive FEMA Grant

(Washington, DC) –  Sixth District Congressman James E. Clyburn announced Thursday that the Britton's Neck/Gresham Volunteer Fire Department in Marion County would receive a $93,240 operations and firefighter safety grant from the U.S. Fire Administration, a division of the Fire Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). These federal funds can be used to support training equipment, personal protective equipment, wellness and fitness, and modifications to fire stations and facilities.

"This rural, volunteer department is motivated to compete for such federal funding demonstrates its commitment to serving area residents," Congressman Clyburn said. "By empowering them with the proper resources we can ensure rural communities are well protected during fire emergencies."

Over the past few months, Congressman Clyburn has announced similar federal grants for local departments in cities and towns like Kingstree, Marion, Orangeburg, Pamplico and Summerton. Congressman Clyburn has supported the FEMA fire assistance grant program since its inception in 2001. In all, more than $1 million in federal support has been directed to the Sixth Congressional District.

Grants like the one awarded Thursday are given to urban, suburban and rural departments across the country. Departments must show, among other qualities, a need for the use of the training or equipment and a financial incapacity to acquire it on its own.
