ASSISTANT DEMOCRATIC LEADER JAMES E. CLYBURN APPLAUDS SENATE CONFIRMATION OF DeANDREA BENJAMIN TO U.S. COURT OF APPEALS FOR THE FOURTH CIRCUIT

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Assistant Democratic Leader James E. Clyburn today issued the following statement applauding the Senate confirmation of DeAndrea Benjamin to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit:

“I am pleased the U.S. Senate has voted to confirm DeAndrea Benjamin to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the first African American from South Carolina to serve on that court. A proud product of South Carolina public schools and universities, Judge Benjamin is an experienced jurist with the wealth of knowledge and varied life experiences necessary to serve with distinction. A longtime Circuit judge on the South Carolina Fifth Judicial Circuit, Judge Benjamin is a former prosecutor and former City of Columbia municipal judge.

“I thank President Joe Biden for nominating Judge Benjamin and for his efforts to ensure our federal judiciary reflects the diversity of this great nation. Of the 151 judicial nominations President Biden has made 100 have been women of which 32 have been African American. In just two years, Joe Biden has placed 12 Black women on the various U.S. courts of appeals, more than all other presidents combined.

“I appreciate Senators Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott’s support of Judge Benjamin’s confirmation, as well as Chairman Dick Durbin for ushering her confirmation through the Senate Judiciary Committee and the full Senate.”
