Congressman Clyburn Announces $8 Million in HBCU Funding

(Washington, DC) – Sixth District Congressman James E. Clyburn today announced the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has awarded $8 million in grants to South Carolina Historically Black Colleges and Universities in an effort to increase the number of minority students pursuing science and technology careers. The program’s goal in part is to establish a partnership with the next generation who will help NNSA meet the demands of national security.

“These grants will help train minority students for future employment in highly technical fields and help enhance our nation’s security,” Congressman Clyburn said. “As an HBCU graduate and the member of Congress who represents all of the grant recipients, I was pleased to work with NNSA to secure this funding.”

Established by Congress in 2000, NNSA is a semi-autonomous agency within the U.S. Department of Energy responsible for enhancing national security through the military application of nuclear science. NNSA maintains and enhances the safety, security, reliability and performance of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile without nuclear testing; works to reduce global danger from weapons of mass destruction; provides the U.S. Navy with safe and effective nuclear propulsion; and responds to nuclear and radiological emergencies in the U.S. and abroad.
