CONGRESSMAN CLYBURN PRAISES THE $245.8 MILLION IN TAX CUTS PROVIDED TO SOUTH CAROLINA FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN IN AUGUST

COLUMBIA, SC Today, Congressman James E. Clyburn praised the findings of a new report from the Joint Economic Committee which estimates that 577,000 Child Tax Credit payments were sent to families in South Carolina in the month of August. A total of $245.8 million in tax cuts went back into the pockets of hardworking families across the state. These monthly Child Tax Credit payments were enacted into law by Democrats in Congress to help families recover from the throes of the pandemic and to help alleviate some of the high costs of childcare. Not a single Republican member of Congress voted for this historic tax cut for working families.

“When we passed the American Rescue Plan in March, we called it a rescue plan for a reason,” said Congressman James E. Clyburn. “These Child Tax Credit payments have been a lifeline to many families across South Carolina and have enabled them to pay for basic needs such as transportation, food, and school expenses for their children. We ought to build on the tremendous progress we have made for families and extend the tax cut for families with children.”

The American Rescue Plan (ARP) dramatically increased the value of the Child Tax Credit from $2,000 per child to up to $3,600 per child under six and $3,000 per child six and older. The ARP also expanded the Child Tax Credit so that it is now fully refundable, and previously ineligible low-income families are receiving the full credit. The average payment per South Carolina household was $426.

The new report also estimates that the expanded Child Tax Credit  is generating over $19 billion in local economic activity each month nationwide, supporting local businesses and jobs.
