Columbia, S.C. – On Friday, February 22, U.S. House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn join other elected officials and Baker family representatives at the renaming of the Lake City Post Office in Lake City, South Carolina in honor of Frazier B. Baker. The new name pays tribute to the memory and courage of Frazier Baker, the first African American appointed to serve as postmaster at the Lake City Post Office in 1897, who was lynched for refusing to give up his post. This dedication ceremony takes place exactly 121 years after Baker and his infant daughter were murdered.
Congressman Clyburn sponsored legislation, H.R. 7230, designating the post office name change to right a past wrong and acknowledge the sacrifices of Frazier Baker and so many others who stood up against injustice and intolerance.
