CLYBURN STATEMENT ON ALEXANDER V. SC STATE CONFERENCE OF THE NAACP SUPREME COURT DECISION

May 23, 2024

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Today, U.S. Congressman James E. Clyburn (SC-06) released the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Alexander v. South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP.

“Today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision in Alexander v. South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP is further affirmation that this Court has chosen to disenfranchise Black voters and rob us of our fundamental access to the ballot box. Equitable representation is the hallmark of a healthy democracy and in this case, the Supreme Court is attempting to steer the country back to a dark place in our history.

“I am old enough to remember the indignities suffered by my parents and other Americans who looked like them. It’s clear, now more than ever, that efforts to disenfranchise Black voters and silence our voices are running rampant. Look no further than this decision and Justice Thomas’ disturbing critique of Brown v. Board of Education in his solo concurrence.”
