| (Washington, DC) - House Democratic Caucus Vice Chair James E. Clyburn (SC-6) issued the following reflection on the passing of his former colleague Strom Thurmond:
"I am saddened to learn of Senator Strom Thurmond's death. Although he and I rarely saw eye to eye on various issues, Senator Thurmond and I always enjoyed a respectful and cordial relationship.
"Senator Thurmond was symbolic of the Old South, but his willingness to change over time set an example for many South Carolinians. Despite running for President on a segregationist platform, he was the first Southern Senator to hire an African American on his staff. This resilient nature allowed him to serve his constituents well.
"His unwavering dedication to the people of South Carolina resulted in his unmatched longevity in public service, which I appreciate and applaud, and along with many other elected officials, seek to emulate."
